Our Family’s Ocean Point

The place we always
came back to.

Our family’s history at Ocean Point stretches back more than a century. Since 1927, generations of our family have spent their summers here, building a collection of memories shaped by the rocky shoreline, the woods, the tides and the traditions of this special coastal community.

My grandfather was among Ocean Point’s early property owners. At one time, he held approximately fifteen acres of land here. Through the generations, the family has retained roughly eight acres, including woodland and a portion of the pond that remains part of our property today.

As the years passed, the land and the surrounding community continued to evolve. What has remained constant is the feeling of returning to a place that is both familiar and endlessly interesting.

The sound of the waves against the granite, the changing light across the water, the fragrance of the evergreens and the quiet of the woodland have all been part of our family story.

Some places are more than destinations.
They become traditions.

A Little Coastal History

Ocean Point, through the years.

Long before Between Tides welcomed its first guest, Ocean Point had already become a beloved gathering place for generations of summer visitors.

01 / The Arrival of Summer

When visitors came by steamboat.

Ocean Point developed as a summer colony between the 1870s and the 1920s, when families began traveling to the Maine coast to escape the summer heat and enjoy the Atlantic air.

Many of its early summer residents came from Augusta, traveling down the Kennebec River by steamboat to the Ocean Point wharf. Cottages began appearing along the coastline, and the community grew into a cherished summer destination.

02 / The Early Cottages

The architecture of a summer colony.

Along Shore Road and Grimes Cove, some of the earliest cottages were built between 1887 and 1900. Their picturesque porches, distinctive rooflines and occasional Queen Anne details reflected the architecture of the era.

These homes became part of the character of Ocean Point. The tradition of families returning year after year helped shape a community where summer memories were passed from one generation to the next.

03 / The Working Coast

A place shaped by the sea.

The wider Boothbay region has a maritime history that stretches back centuries. Fishing, boatbuilding and coastal trade helped shape the communities that grew along these shores.

Shipyards, working waterfronts and lobster boats remain important parts of the region’s identity. Here, the sea has never been simply a beautiful backdrop. It has long been part of everyday life.

A History Before the Summer Cottages

The land has a longer story.

Long before the arrival of European settlers or the development of Ocean Point as a summer community, the lands and waters of this region were part of Wabanaki homelands.

Wabanaki peoples have maintained deep cultural relationships with the forests, rivers and coastal waters of Maine for thousands of years. Their histories, traditions and communities continue today.

Our family has long been aware that the land holds stories reaching far beyond our own generations. We believe its history deserves to be acknowledged with respect and care.

Stories Along the Shoreline

Lighthouses, legends
and the open Atlantic.

An Ocean Point walk is about more than the scenery. The shoreline offers glimpses into the maritime history of the Boothbay region.

A Lighthouse on the Horizon

Ram Island Light

Visible from Ocean Point, Ram Island Light has guided mariners near the entrance to Boothbay Harbor since the nineteenth century. Its distinctive silhouette remains a favorite sight along the coast.

A Guardian of the Harbor

The Cuckolds

Established as a fog signal station in 1892 and later fitted with a lighthouse in 1907, The Cuckolds marks the ocean approach to Boothbay Harbor. It remains one of the region’s memorable offshore landmarks.

A Story from 1912

The William Rice

The two-masted schooner William Rice ran aground on the rocks at Ocean Point in November 1912. Its wreck remained visible for years, becoming part of the community’s local maritime lore.

A New Chapter

From family retreat
to Between Tides.

The Carriage House is a newer chapter in our family’s Ocean Point story. A light-filled studio above the garage offers an opportunity to share this beautiful setting with visitors in a more personal way.

Rather than creating another conventional hotel experience, we imagined a private coastal base camp where guests could settle in comfortably and spend their days discovering everything the region offers.

That is the idea behind Between Tides: a smaller place to stay, thoughtful hospitality, and a bigger connection to Maine.

Less House. More Maine.
